This is my personal experience of how I felt about the day I first watched 'DOS'
I was slow to wake that morning. Staying up late with my friend Elisabeth the night before made me want to stay in bed for another couple hours. But then I couldn’t help a smile and a pang of excitement as I remembered what I was going to do today. I was going to see ‘The Desolation of Smaug’! After waiting for a whole year for the second chapter in ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy, my anticipation and patience were to be finally rewarded!

At that thought I flung my covers away from me and grabbed the clothes I had laid out the night before and went into the bathroom to change. Elisabeth soon woke, and once our whole family had eaten gotten ready to go, we all piled into the van. We made the 45 minute drive to my Uncle Bubba and Aunt Kim’s apartment in SeaTac. The building was not too far away from where we would see ‘The Hobbit’ movie. Once there, our Uncle greeted us and we took an elevator up the building to the apartment. The movie started at 4:30pm but it was 1:00pm now. It would be at least 3 hours before we left. I was anxious to see the movie but I waited, dozing off sometimes because of the late night I had. When it came to lunchtime I wasn’t very hungry because of my excitement but knew I would have to eat something, so I did.
After what seemed like the longest 3 hours of my life, it was official we were going to leave. I was suddenly filled with energy and sprang up from where I sat, grabbed my bag and stood anxiously by the door. “I think someone’s excited.” Elisabeth remarked, that just made me smile even more, I was excited. Once Elisabeth, Bubba, Kim and my Dad were ready, we said a quick good-bye and strode from the apartment. I rushed down the halls and to the elevator. When the Van had been unlocked I climbed into it as quickly as I could and buckled, ready to go! We drove down the highways that led to the city of Seattle I looking out my window to pass the time. The day was gloomy and damp, and almost looked like it would rain. But the mood of the weather didn’t dampen my excitement and joy; I had waited long for this, and I wasn’t about to let a little damp weather ruin my mood. I couldn’t help a smile the whole way, my excitement was growing with every minute!
Once we reached the inner part of Seattle, we found a parking spot in a public parking garage and piled out. As we walked out of the garage and into the streets I clung onto Elisabeth. Our group of five made our trek down the streets, passing street musicians and small various shops as we did. By then the grey clouds let down a sprinkle of rain. The cool, clean air filled my lungs and made me enjoy the moment even more.
We soon reached the Pacific Science Center, the place we were going to see ‘The Desolation of Smaug’. We received our tickets and made our way into the plaza of the Center. A large ‘Hobbit’ poster hung on the wall of a nearby building, I saw it and smiled.
Our company of five made our way into a large building that had various kid-friendly and fun activities scattered about the room. And in the center of the room was a large, white dome-like room where the IMAX theatre was and where ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ was going to play. The whole building was crowded with many people, more people in the building than I had seen in my previous visits. Posters of various ‘Hobbit’ characters lined the outside of the IMAX building. We passed them as we made our way down the carpeted curving ramp that led into the theatre.
The smell of popcorn and other treats filled the room as we made our way to the man who took our tickets. He also gave us 3D glasses which we would wear during the film. I was surprised to see how long the line of people waiting to get into the theatre was. People had even just begun to trickle from the barriers. It was at least another twenty minutes before the movie would begin, so Bubba, Kim and I went to the snack counter to get some drinks. I got water to ease my dry throat, since I was recovering from a recent cold.
We waited in line for some time and my eyes drifted to a small television above me where the trailer for the new Hobbit movie was playing. I smiled as I watched it knowing I’d soon be able to see the movie in full!
Then the doors to the cinema opened...and the long line of people waiting to see the movie moved along as each person filed into the large, lit room. We took our seats, Elisabeth and my Dad sitting on either side of me. The cinema lights dimmed and the whole of the audience put on their 3D glasses. Before the movie was to be presented we were given a demonstration of what the experience would be like. Then, as the room became silent and the screen blackened, the humming and notes of the score began. ‘The Hobbit’ faded onto screen, hesitated for a few moments then faded off into blackness once more. The movie had begun...
“What have we done?!” Bilbo asked in horror as he watched the dragon Smaug fly across the landscape to destroy Laketown, then the screen turned to black. The credits and the song ‘I See Fire’ played as the names of the people involved of producing ‘The Hobbit’ faded on and off the screen. I leaned my head onto Elisabeth's shoulder in despair, as I took it all in. That...that was it?! No! It couldn’t be! I waited for a whole year for the second chapter in the Hobbit just to have an ending like THAT?! There had to be more! There just HAD to be! But there wasn’t and I reluctantly stood from my seat and departed from the cinema with my companions.
As I rode home with my family that night I though about the movie and how incredible it was. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to wait another year for the next chapter. But I hoped when I got ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ on DVD a few months later, it would hold me off until next December.
